L1 and L2 Regularization

L1 and L2 regularization are two widely used techniques in the field of machine learning to prevent overfitting. Overfitting is a common problem in machine learning algorithms, where the model learns the training data so well that it fails to generalize to new data.

L1 regularization, also known as Lasso regularization, adds a penalty term to the cost function proportional to the sum of absolute values of the model parameters. This results in a sparse model where some of the parameters are forced to be exactly zero. L1 regularization is useful in feature selection, where we want to identify the most important features of the data.

L2 regularization, also known as Ridge regularization, adds a penalty term to the cost function proportional to the square of the model parameters. This results in a model with smaller parameter values, and it is useful in reducing the impact of individual features on the output. L2 regularization is also known to improve the numerical stability of the model.

In general, both L1 and L2 regularization are effective techniques to prevent overfitting, and they can be combined to form Elastic Net regularization. Elastic Net regularization combines the strengths of both L1 and L2 regularization, and it can be useful in scenarios where we have a large number of features with varying degrees of importance.

In conclusion, L1 and L2 regularization are powerful techniques in machine learning to prevent overfitting and improve the generalization performance of the model. By adding a penalty term to the cost function, we can control the complexity of the model and avoid over-reliance on any individual feature.
